Taiwan, A Beautiful Island with Passionate People
Taiwan is located on the southeastern corner of the Eurasian tectonic plate and is separated from Mainland China by the Taiwan Strait. From north to south the island has roughly the shape of a tobacco leaf. Its land mass covers an area of 36,000 square kilometers, which is slightly smaller than Switzerland. The population of 23 million is, however, about 3 times larger than that of Switzerland. In 2003, the average yearly income of Taiwan's citizens was US$13,167, ranking it 24th in the world. Taiwan has been one of the Asian countries that created the Four Little Tigers (Dragons) miracle and today the country is one of the most important suppliers of high-tech products to countries around the world.
The economy of Taiwan developed with an astonishing speedin the second half of the 20th century. With hard work and optimistic determination, the Taiwan people managed to successfully turn an agriculture-based economy into a light industry and trade oriented one and then, in the next stage, into a high-tech powerhouse. As a result, the Taiwanese now live in an affluent society, which offers stability and safety. And Taiwan has become a great destination for foreigners who want to experience a very unique culture.
Taiwan's Natural Wonders
Situated in the Pacific Ocean, between Japan to the north and the Philippines to the south Taiwan has a sup-tropical to tropical climate in the coastal regions. Since its mountains raise up to more than 3000 meters above sea level, the island also has temperate-zone and even frigid-zone climates in its central regions. Because of this wide range of climatic conditions, combined with plenty of rainfall throughout the year, Taiwan is graced with a rich and diverse ecological environment.
The six national parks of Taiwan all feature remarkable scenic and geological features. You can explore the wonders of the world-famous Taroko Gorge, climb to the highest peak of northeast Asia -- Yushan -- or trek to Mt. Dabajian, which counts as a true scenic wonder of the world. Taiwan features also a volcanic landscape at Yangmingshan and a tropical paradise in Kenting. Besides the six national parks there are 12 national scenic areas, which include spectacular coasts, scenic lakes and mountainous areas.
Taiwan's natural wonders are not just limited to the land. If you head to the east coast you can go on whale and dolphin watching trips where chances are high that you meet with dolphins and whales frolicking in the water and coming close to your boat. Under water you can dive to the wonder world of coral reefs teeming with colorful fish in all shapes and sizes.
